The Florida Project (Copy)

I was inspired by the film, The Florida Project. The film focuses on the themes of childhood and blissful ignorance, contrasting it with the adult’s struggle and sacrifice.

Childhood was the most important theme that I identified for my collection. The kids in the movie are energetic, mischievous, fearless but also naive of course. I wanted circles to be a recurring motif in the collection, playing on that idea of naivety and blissful ignorance of the children since the adults try to shelter and protect them as much as possible.

Design Process

I interpreted purple to represent safety, protection, and home. Whereas, green represents the unknown. The main setting where the protagonists live is a purple motel, the manager is also like a family figure for them, always looking out for the kids and protecting them.

When the kids venture out of the area, they get themselves into dangerous situations, and these scenes feature more green - whether it be through the environment, colour grading or garments. As such, I started my collection with an oversized purple cardigan and concluded it with a green dress with cut-outs to reference the vulnerability.
